Sport Leadership
Overview
The Sport Leadership program creates pathways to meaningful employment within the sport sector by supporting individuals facing barriers to entry. Through funded training, certifications, and direct connections to employment opportunities, the program equips participants with the skills, experience, and confidence to succeed in roles across sport and recreation.
Who the Program Supports
The Sport Leadership program is focused on supporting refugees who face barriers to employment, while creating inclusive entry points into the sport and recreation sector.
Program Background
Launched in 2025 as a pilot initiative in partnership with Northpine Foundation, the Sport Leadership program was developed to address critical workforce shortages across Canada’s sport system.
By investing in Black, Indigenous and People of Colour (BIPOCs) and removing financial and systemic barriers, the program strengthens both individual career pathways and the broader sport ecosystem.
Why This Work Matters
Across Canada, communities continue to face staffing shortages in key sport and recreation roles (i.e., lifeguards), impacting programming and access at the local level. At the same time, many individuals encounter barriers to entering the workforce.
The Sport Leadership program bridges this gap, creating opportunities for individuals while supporting the long-term sustainability and growth of the sport sector.
