Black Leaders in Sports Day 2026
Event Summary
Black Leaders in Sports Day (BLSD) is an annual national gathering hosted by Inclusion in Canadian Sports Network (ICSN) that convenes emerging and established Black leaders from across Canada’s amateur sport system.
Launched in 2025, BLSD was created to address systemic inequities in sport, strengthen leadership pathways, amplify lived experiences, and build sustainable networks of support and accountability across the sector.
In 2026, BLSD expanded into a two-day national convening in Ottawa:
Day 1
Senate Visit (Parliament Hill)
Black leaders in sports from across Canada met with Senators to engage in candid, solution-focused dialogue about the state of inclusion in Canadian sport. This moment, years in the making, moved the conversation beyond awareness toward systemic, measurable action. Discussions centered on racism in sport, leadership representation, safe environments, and the urgent need for accountability across institutions.
Day 2
Government Engagement & National Dialogue (Sir John A. Macdonald Building)
Seventy-five Black leaders from across the Canadian amateur sport sector gathered in Room 100 of the Sir John A. Macdonald Building for a full day of presentations, policy discussions, and community dialogue.
The day included:
- Opening remarks from Deputy House Leader Arielle Kayabaga and Secretary of State (Sport) Adam van Koeverden
- A presentation from Canadian Heritage on Canada’s Anti-Racism Strategy 2024–2028
- An overview of the Supporting Black Canadian Communities Initiative (SBCCI)
- A Sport Canada discussion on Canada’s Sport Policy 2025–2035
- A fireside chat with members of the Federal Parliamentary Black Caucus
- A national reception bringing together MPs, Senators, and sport leaders
Despite winter travel challenges that limited representation from every province and territory, the intention was clear: to align leadership, policy, and lived experience toward collective, sustained action.
BLSD 2026 reaffirmed a powerful truth — the room was filled not only with expertise and talent, but with deep collective strength, joy, and shared responsibility. The work continues.
