Black Leaders in Sports Day
On April 2, 2025, ICSN proudly hosted the inaugural Black Leaders in Sports Day in Ottawa—marking a historic first in Canadian sport. For the first time, Black professionals across the amateur sports system—including administrators, coaches, officials, researchers, and sport medicine experts—gathered to collaborate, learn, and lead.
This landmark event comes at a critical time. According to a 2025 Statistics Canada study, over one-quarter (26%) of sports participants in athletic roles perceive racism and discrimination as ongoing issues in community sport. Racialized individuals are three times more likely to experience unfair treatment compared to their non-racialized counterparts.
Black Leaders in Sports Day is a direct response to these realities—creating space for support, advocacy, and the development of equitable leadership pathways in sport. With overwhelming support from attendees and partners, ICSN looks forward to expanding this initiative in 2026 and beyond.
Thank you
